FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What is ERP therapy?

Exposure and Response Prevention is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral treatment commonly used for OCD. During ERP, you gradually practice facing feared thoughts, situations, sensations or uncertainty while reducing the compulsions, reassurance seeking and avoidance that typically follow.

Do you treat intrusive thoughts?

Yes. Intrusive thoughts are extremely common in OCD and can involve themes that feel frightening, disturbing, embarrassing or inconsistent with a person's values. Treatment focuses on changing how you respond to intrusive thoughts rather than trying to prove that a particular thought could never come true.

Do I need an OCD diagnosis before contacting you?

No. Many people contact us because they aren't sure whether what they're experiencing is OCD, anxiety or something else. An initial assessment helps us better understand your symptoms and determine whether our practice is an appropriate fit.

Do you work with children and teenagers with OCD?

Yes. Summit OCD & Anxiety Therapy works with children, adolescents and adults. When appropriate, parents and family members may also be involved in treatment.

Do you offer virtual OCD and anxiety therapy?

Yes. We offer secure telehealth appointments for clients located in jurisdictions where the treating clinician is authorized to provide services. Dr. Wacha is PYSPACT certified and can provide telehealth in any PSYPACT certified state.

What's the difference between regular talk therapy and ERP for OCD?

ERP specifically targets the cycle of obsessions, anxiety, avoidance and compulsive behaviors that can maintain OCD. Rather than repeatedly reassuring you about a fear, ERP helps you develop a different response to uncertainty and anxiety.
